Abstract | Although more commonly associated with elementary school rather than high school students, "Read Across America" celebrations can cater to any age group and generate enthusiasm for reading long after the festivities have ended. In this article, the authors, library media specialists at Washington Township High School in Sewell, New Jersey, share the success of their school's "Read Across America" celebration that featured Dr. Seuss and "The Cat in the Hat" as a theme. The librarians, with the cooperation of educators from other departments planned a media campaign, purchased costumes and T-shirts, created PowerPoint presentations of Seuss titles, and included performance art, music, and food to make the celebration as fun and inclusive as possible. Positive feedback was received from both students and faculty, and the day generated an interest in reading and book discussion throughout the school. (ERIC). |
