Abstract | In this article, the authors who are an interdisciplinary team of middle school educators collaboratively developed and implemented an interdisciplinary unit designed to help middle school students: (1) think like mathematicians and scientists; (2) develop specific areas of expertise in math and science; and (3) use literature as a tool to learn across the curriculum. A standards-based interdisciplinary unit was designed to seamlessly integrate math, science, and literature using a rubber band cannon. Three national standards in literacy, math and science guided the development of the interdisciplinary unit, and they brought these standards to life by guiding their students in carrying out scientific inquiry leading to data collection and analysis and finally to hypothesis testing. Among other things, they discuss the lessons they learned about creating and implementing interdisciplinary curriculum. (Contains 4 figures.) (Author). |
