Abstract | This article describes a course taught by the author, Training in the Professoriate, aimed at educating graduate students and new faculty about the many facets of a successful faculty member. In this course he learned that despite 6-10 years of post-secondary education, students had many gaps in their knowledge of and misunderstandings about the duties, responsibilities, activities, and expectations associated with an academic career. For example, students are aware of academic ranks (Assistant, Associate, and Full Professor), but have no idea what they mean. While the attributes of the ranks may differ somewhat among institutions, the author expected students to be familiar with the requirements for promotion at their current institution. Instead, their unfamiliarity indicates that they are not prepared for the career they intend to pursue. (ERIC). |
