Abstract | The purpose of writing is to communicate with an audience. Teachers need to move heaven and earth to be sure that every child knows what it is to become a published author. Criteria for selecting a piece is important. In this article, the author explores why the criteria that children use for selecting poetry to share with an audience differ from her expectations. She launched a poetry study that took place daily that allowed students to choose and share poems, interviewed children about why they were excluding certain poems from consideration for sharing and why children were rejecting poems with serious matter in favor of "happy" poems. Responses seemed to fall into three distinct categories, all of which indicated an awareness of audience as the major criteria for poetry selection. Furthermore, teachers should ensure that audiences are larger than just themselves. Audiences should include parents, peers, and, where possible, the wider community. (Author). |
