AbstractThis article reports the findings of a study examining the values, life stereotypes, and models of behavior of the so-called "next generation" of the Russian youth. The study was titled "From Secondary School Graduate to College Student to Graduate" and was carried out in seven higher educational institutions and two secondary specialized educational institutions in Irkutsk Oblast and Buriatia. The survey covered students in technicums and college students in the first through fourth years of study in social, economic, law, natural science, and technical science faculties. The study reveal the following results: (1) Under the influence of globalization, young people are changing at a rapid pace and are trading the meaning-of-life principles of the Soviet generation for consumerist guidelines. Those who "couldn't care less" and were "just out for kicks" yesterday are setting specific goals for themselves; (2) The new generation of Russian youth are now more social and communicative, more purposeful and practical, more creative and able to compete, and more individualistic; (3) About half of these youth rate their generation as a generation of intellectuals; (4) Another characteristic feature of the generation is their high level of communicativeness, their desire to engage in informal interaction and take part in gatherings; and (5) The new quality of today's young people is their urge to take risks.
