Abstract | For many children and their families, the period of time between Thanksgiving and the New Year is marked with great cheer, delicious home-cooked meals and exciting road trips to visit family and friends. But families affected by attention deficit disorder (ADD) can often miss out on the joys of the holiday season if the condition is not managed appropriately throughout the year. In this article, the author suggests several strategies on how a family and a child with ADD may enjoy a less stressful and happy holidays. These strategies include: (1) Continuing ADD medications even during schools break; (2) Maintaining certain aspects of the usual routine during the holiday celebrations; (3) Informing relatives and friends prior to the holiday gatherings that debates about diagnosis or treatment should be avoided during discussions; and (4) Keeping the child's overall diet as healthy as possible.
