Abstract	Respect involves treating others with courtesy and helping to preserve their dignity. In the moment of crisis, individuals often focus on emotional and physical self-protection for themselves and their children and youth they serve. Safety involves preventing danger, risk, or injury. This is essential in any situation and becomes crucial in a crisis. However, it is not good to let the critical importance of safety grant license for disrespectful behavior. Respect and safety are interdependent. In this article, the authors discuss the importance of being rationally detached in the face of a crisis to make respect and safety work hand in hand. (ERIC).
