Abstract | In all positions, professionals must continue to develop their skills. The higher education IT profession is no exception. However, many of these skills should be developed progressively. If IT professionals can start learning these twelve skills early in their career, they will have a good chance of turning the skills into habits--and of becoming successful and effective IT professionals. In this article the author identifies twelve such habits, involving objectives or skills that he feels are key to the success of IT professionals: (1) They are multilingual; (2) They avoid the unconscious conspiracy; (3) They read broadly; (4) They educate others about information-based organizations; (5) They understand the limits of their advocacy; (6) They are cautious when speaking publicly; (7) They cultivate their advisory committees ; (8) They are enablers; (9) They do not whine; (10) They are generalists; (11) They redefine themselves; and (12) They maintain balance.
