| Abstract | This article contains suggestions for teachers wishing to remain active in the field of education but not on a full-time basis, especially considering that the oldest of the baby boomers have begun to retire, that people are living longer, and a growing segment of the workforce views retirement as a transition to a new venture, not the end of an old one. Teachers and administrators tend to retire earlier because of pensions and adequate medical coverage. To save money, some districts provide incentives for senior teachers, who have the highest salaries, to retire early to make room for less experienced, less expensive teachers. With early retirement, many teachers continue to support activities involving education. Career options for retirees include teaching overseas, teaching adult education, college and university teaching, private school teaching, mentoring, and tutoring. (ERIC). |
