AbstractWhen marking GCSE data handling coursework, the author was repeatedly reminded just how poor the level of statistical understanding is among students. In response to a feeling that the teaching of handling data topics was limited, the author and her colleague designed a project with Y8 students to try to teach statistics for a deeper understanding. Trying to teach the objectives of the national strategy framework through the project was difficult. Despite this, she believes that a project-based approach develops more useful skills for future citizens than standard methods of teaching handling data. The author and her colleague began by identifying what they felt were the inadequacies in their current practice. All too often they were presented with a learning objective for which they would find themselves making up data or collecting trivial data (eg shoe sizes) in order to teach the objective. They conjectured that if they were able to use data that students were really interested in then learning would be more meaningful. This article describes the project they designed which involved working with a mixed attainment Y8 class in two different schools, facilitating an exchange of data between the two. Choice of data collected was to be driven by students, given the brief that they were to try to find out what it would be like to be a student at the other school. The author concludes by saying that she believes such projects can deepen students' understanding of what statistics are for, how they are used and how to interpret them. (ERIC).
