AbstractIn this article, the author discusses seven critical lessons for navigating a leadership position in higher education. The author focuses on developing a personal means of remaining centered regardless of circumstances or situations as well as building an ethical foundation for one's work. He uses spiraling as a metaphor to describe his own personal and professional development. His initial consciousness of this metaphor can be traced to the years between the end of college and the beginning of graduate school, a time of transition for anyone considering a career in academe. To illustrate, the author compares spiraling to climbing a spiral staircase wherein one inevitably returns to the same point on a vertical line but at a higher level. He believes the same is true with one's own life experiences. Occasionally a person returns to a situation that appears familiar but, through one's own progression, he or she now possesses the resources, the memory, and the confidence to propel themselves upward. The author then concludes leaving a challenge--to be cognizant of the glass ceiling, but with the implicit knowledge and understanding that it does not represent an insufferable barrier in one's life.
