Abstract | Coach education is important, but expensive--both in cost and time to public and private athletic programs. To provide basic coach education to coaches, new, innovative, inexpensive approaches must be developed. Joint efforts between state high school associations and colleges and universities can meet those needs. The "Montana approach" is one method by which such teamwork has been successful. Since 1999, thousands of coaches in Montana have been required by their state organization, the Montana High School Association (MHSA), to complete a web-based coach education curriculum. That curriculum was developed in a joint venture by the author and MHSA and is provided to the school districts of Montana at no cost. This article discusses the Montana approach and suggests ways to implement similar programs in athletic programs across the country. (Author). |
