Abstract | In this article, the author discusses how to motivate students and put fun back in the classroom. Through the inservice training on a Basic Intensive Week in William Glasser's Choice Theory, he learns that human beings are motivated by five basic human needs, fun, being one of them, is the genetic reward for learning. However, what is fun for one person is not necessarily fun for others. To create a classroom environment that is fun for all, he recommends that an understanding of the other four of Glasser's five basic human needs is essential. Glasser's five basic human needs are discussed: (1) the need for survival; (2) the need for love and belonging; (3) the need to gain personal power; (4) the need to be free; and (5) the need to play, to have fun. If teachers are intentional about creating an environment that addresses all of these basic needs, they will tap into the intrinsic motivation that is essential for students to be successful in this time of higher standards.
