| Abstract | In this article, the authors present a case study based on the daily activities, challenges, coping strategies, and relationship dynamics of a heterosexual, HIV-serodiscordant (mixed HIV status) couple in which the male partner has AIDS and the female partner is his primary caregiver. Rather than looking for specific determinants of behavior, the authors' goal is to gain a holistic understanding of what it means to this couple to live with AIDS. The results suggests that there are four common themes that emerged from the couple's narratives: (1) the emotional impact of learning about the diagnosis; (2) new roles and experiences in daily life; (3) the need for social support; and (4) the spiritual journey. Finally, the authors sought to identify specific counseling recommendations for individuals who work with HIV-serodiscordant couples. (ERIC). |
