| Abstract | The hijab, the veil worn by Muslim women, can be a touchstone issue to give students an entry into the complex nature of Islam. It allows students to discover for themselves how symbol is used as a political, social, and cultural expression of Islam by different groups, both inside and outside the religion. By starting with their own experiences of judgments made about their appearance, high school students, who are in the midst of defining themselves in the world, can make the connection between their own struggles and the current disputes over the hijab. In the lesson called "Unveiling the Hijab," students critically examine primary and secondary source documents that represent different stances on the hijab, which is banned by law in public schools in France and required by law in Iran. By the end of the lesson, students come to their own opinion about the meaning of the hijab, the complexity of Islam, and different public and private uses of this symbol. (Author). |
