| Abstract | In the late winter, curriculum at school shifts from studying the environment to birds and mammals. After contacting the local chapter of the Audubon Society and researching a variety of indigenous species to feature, the Atlantic puffin was chosen as an introduction and main theme of study. Students learn how puffins once thrived off the coast of Maine, but were wiped out by hunters in the late 1880s. Using the internet, as well as school and local libraries as resources, students learn how puffins were hunted for their meat, eggs, and feathers. They view pictures of women's fashions at the time, including hats decorated with feathers. Students also tie in the fragility of the ecosystem, from previous studies of the environment. Additionally, the topic lends itself to interdisciplinary connections such as drawings or sculptures in art, fiction or non-fiction writing, and estimating population projections in mathematics.
