AbstractCareer and technical education has always been able to change with the times. New technologies and new educational challenges have made such change necessary. Sometimes a school must reinvent itself and undergo a rebirth as part of that adaptation. That is what has happened at the former St. Louis Career Academy. In the 2004-05 school year, the school opened in a brand new building and became the Clyde C. Miller Career Academy. The 143,000-square-foot building is a state-of-the-art facility with a Smart Board in every classroom and a nearly one-to-one student-to-computer ratio. It is more than simply concrete, brick, glass and wiring that makes this school "reborn." The four-year, full-day technical high school is now an academic school with a technical focus centered around 11 technical pathways: biotechnology, building trades, business management and administration, computer networking, culinary arts, database management, electronics/electricity, health services, hospitality studies, manufacturing, and multimedia. The strength of the academics is reflected in the fact that all students are required to take four years of English, four years of math, four years of science and three years of social studies as well as practical and fine arts. The centerpiece of the career academy's programs is the senior internship program in which senior students are placed in off-campus work environments of their chosen pathways. As a graduation requirement, each senior must complete the internship program and then prepare and present a senior research project. (ERIC).
