AbstractDuring a psychiatric hospitalization of 5 to 10 days, cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) strategies can be used for the management of inpatients and to support the transition to outpatient treatment. This format was chosen after several years of frustration dealing with crisis inpatient care. The use of CBT is well known, and it seemed that an inpatient adaptation was possible, emphasizing its cognitive restructuring dialogues. CBT is taught from manuals that are mostly used to conduct outpatient care (Compton et al., 2004). This article provides a thorough description of the CBT approach and its application to inpatient psychiatric hospitalization, indicating both the benefits and drawbacks. It concludes, based on the author's professional experience in an environment where the therapeutic style was put in place in an effort to energize staff and patients--despite the drawbacks, a CBT focus appears to provide a productive approach for treating patients in a crisis inpatient setting. However, further attempts to apply this model would greatly clarify its usefulness. (ERIC).
