AbstractIn this article, the author analyzes and summarizes geographic education in Louisiana from a historical perspective with a specific emphasis on the degree to which geography was implemented into the state's standards. To accomplish that, he draws from the following three sources of information: active and retired social studies teachers from a spectrum of grade levels and a variety of locations around Louisiana, direct and indirect information from social studies educators at administrative levels, and several published accounts. Two common threads connect these sources of information. They are the demonstration of a continued commitment to improve the level of geographic education in K-12 schools throughout Louisiana and a past or present connection with the Louisiana Geography Education Alliance (LaGEA). LaGEA is one of fifty state educational alliances established almost fifteen years ago in the United States with the financial and organizational assistance of National Geographic Society (NGS). Although program-related funding from NGS is no longer available, some LaGEA activities still receive funding through the State of Louisiana. (ERIC).
