Abstract | Noting that West Africans view the family unit as a cooperative community encompassing not only living relatives but also those not yet born and those already dead, and asserting that many practices exist in black American communities which can be traced back to West Africa, this paper examines African survivals in the black American family and their impact on contemporary black American families.
