Abstract | In this article, the author shares two investigations that relate the variables of height and volume using different contexts. Each of the investigations surfaced unfinished learning for students, regardless of their starting place, and facilitated growth in understanding of measurement and algebra. The Functions and Volume of Vases task challenged students to deepen their understanding of graphing functions. The Making Water Tanks task provided more geometric structure as each tank was a rectangular prism rather than a curvaceous cylinder. Taken together, Filling Vases and Making Water Tanks supported students realizing that a graph is more than a picture of a situation. Everyone benefited from one another's explanations of the graphs and from the cognitive dissonance of switching input and output from one context to the next. Most importantly, all of the students persisted in productive struggle and revisited and revised initial responses as they learned more about what it means to measure volume and graph a function.
