Abstract | In 2019, Kentucky unanimously adopted new social studies standards featuring a version of the C3 Framework's inquiry arc, joining dozens of other states with inquiry practices embedded in their standards. The state legislature revised them in 2022 by passing the "Teaching American Principles Act." The Kentucky law requires teachers to incorporate 24 "fundamental American documents and speeches" into their curriculum and to adhere to 11 directives regarding historical trends and their modern impact. The legislation allows teachers to discuss the historical oppression of certain groups but requires teachers to emphasize that all Americans can succeed if they are committed to "seizing that opportunity through hard work, pursuit of education, and good citizenship." In this article, the authors describe an inquiry-based approach to a Gender and Women's Studies (GWS) course at Bryan Station High School in Lexington, Kentucky, designed to confront contemporary women's issues. The course consists of a curricular loop of six inquiries developed with the Inquiry Design Model. The inquiries push students to consider the larger conceptual question that guides the course: "What can women teach us about equality?" (ERIC). |
