AbstractLibraries have always been civic institutions in their communities. Whether it's a public library supporting community members with election information or a school library offering 18-year-olds voter registration opportunities, participating in civic matters is a mission that comes naturally to librarians. In this article, Carolyn Foote recalls her own work around civic engagement which involved planning activities for students when she was a school librarian, but also engaging in library advocacy out in the larger world. She also examines how librarians can connect students with ways to engage, teaching students discerning information literacy practices, or whether librarians are engaging in civic matters themselves or stepping up in tough censorship fights. She concludes that librarians are giving them models of how to engage in civil civic discourse and of how to make whatever changes they want to make in their future, no matter what side of any political aisle they may land upon. They are showing students how to exercise the most fundamental democratic right: the freedom to express themselves and to be a part of this great experiment called democracy. (ERIC).
