Abstract | People often do not have sufficient time or resources to attend a training that could help them become successful or implement a career change. Community colleges require a lengthy and substantial time commitment away from work and family while attending class. To best help those with limited incomes gain necessary skills that can improve their financial situations, we can shorten and intensify training utilizing proper vetting and prerequisite classes and demanding and expecting a higher level of performance from students. We must meet industry requirements and provide accelerated, intensive training based on skills attainment rather than on time spent in a seat. These options would provide students with alternatives to lengthy programs currently being offered which do not guarantee high-quality jobs with benefits, career pathways, and worker voice. With the shortage of workers that stemmed from the COVID-19 pandemic, companies are eager to get new hires working as soon as possible, which fuels the need for effective, short-term training models.
