AbstractBridge International Academies, the largest network of elementary schools in the developing world operates both low-cost private schools, and public-private partnership schools. More than 800,000 students are enrolled in 2,026 schools in five countries. Bridge tries lots of different ideas and initiatives, many of which are backed up by research in other school settings. The question is: will they work at Bridge? The first test is whether the observation team observes the idea working well. The second is whether the data show learning gains, as measured by a randomized controlled trial if possible. The author's purpose is not to persuade that Bridge is good or bad, but to opine that education data analysis dramatically underinvests in the companion field of observation and, as a result, doesn't have as helpful an effect on schools as expected. The author relates Bridge observation team field officer Imisi Olu-Joseph's description of a typical day of visiting schools and observing teachers and students in action, and what works and what doesn't at Bridge.
