AbstractDespite tempting illusions of college campuses as bubbles removed from "the real world", college students are not immune to trauma in its many forms including sexual violence, racism, death of loved ones, car accidents, abuse, or natural disasters. In the best-case scenario, colleges and their administrators and faculty can be sources of solace, support, and safety that students need as they heal from trauma. In the worst-case scenario, students either don't know who to turn to on a college campus or have so much distrust of their institutions that they suffer alone. In a parallel worst case scenario, colleges and universities are, themselves, sources of traumatization. One way in which the best-case scenario can be evoked is through work to build a trauma-informed practice in student affairs this is broadly embraced on a campus as opposed to isolated to particular offices that regularly interact with students who have experienced trauma. To effectively support students through recuperation and healing, a trauma-informed student affairs division is one that embraces a holistic and power-conscious approach. In this article, the author offers six practices toward a trauma-informed student affairs division: (1) Foster an Inclusive Culture of Care; (2) Focus on Relationships; (3) Enhance Collective Knowledge to Recognize and Understand Trajectories of Trauma; (4) Audit Policies and Practices Through a Trauma-Informed Lens; (5) Provide Effective Support to Students Impacted by Trauma; and (6) Care for Ourselves.
