AbstractThe climate for minoritized groups in Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) is exclusionary and hinders their capacity to thrive and earn degrees in STEM disciplines. Most research on and support for programs to diversify technology and STEM fields have focused on strategies in highly selective, well-resourced institutions, which are predominantly White and enroll very few racially minoritized students, particularly Black, Latinx, and indigenous students. Many Minority Serving Institutions (MSI) serve as models for creating inclusive STEM climates and graduate disproportionately large shares and numbers of minoritized STEM students. Yet, few resources or attention have been devoted to MSIs' strategies and successes in cultivating talent development in STEM fields. In this piece, the authors examine how the everyday activities of personnel in Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) computer science departments, particularly staff, influence the success of Latinx and other minoritized students, who face an array of challenges in navigating postsecondary education. Staff can play a critical role in fostering validating experiences to enable Latinx students to experience academic and social affirmation and encouragement, cultural affirmation, a sense of belonging, and critical insider knowledge about navigating the computer science major in college and beyond.
