AbstractHigher education demographics continue to shift, with students from various minoritized identities increasing in enrollment. Yet, retention, completion, and success rates remain scarce for these students. Current metrics uphold homophobic and transphobic binaries in the categorization of gender and sexualities prohibiting higher education institutions to capture the percentage of their student populations identifying amongst the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersex, and Asexual (LGBTQIA+) community. This issue is further amplified at community colleges. For the purpose of this piece, the authors want to call attention to both the LGBTQIA+ and Latina/o community, the LatinX community. They examine the way in which current data collection tools fail to analyze students through an intersectional lens, which is key and needed to equitably respond to their needs. The authors recommend that Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) leaders begin by including demographic metrics that are inclusive of an array of gender and sexual identities when they initiate activities for HSI grant-funded services and programs.
