Abstract | The historical moment of pandemic isolation is turning into an extended time of distance or hybrid learning, robbing students of regular human interaction. The visual narrative can be of pedagogical significance in reimagining student-teacher connections. Inviting students to visually respond to and record their lived daily experiences can afford a way to process their emotional encounters. Sharing the artistic responses with the classroom community, in turn, can serve as a conduit for a shared experience, allowing students and their teachers to feel together while still apart. The author hopes to inspire art educators to use the power of visual journaling with their students. Art educators may provide students with a word or a phrase and ask them to reflect on the emotional response that the word or phrase elicits. Further asking questions, such as "What medium or materials can convey that emotional response?" or "Does color or texture play a role in this response?" can be used to delve into a deeper reflection. Limiting the materials to what is readily available in the classroom or at home invites the artmakers to connect to the material more personally. (ERIC). |
