Abstract | There is much to say about teaching in this particular pandemic moment but neither the words to capture it fully nor the distance to reflect on its complexity. But this much is known: In order to heal as educators, as leaders of classrooms, and as facilitators of community, radical love needs to be invited into the classroom--even if the initial thought of that makes educators squirm a bit. The truth is that slowing down to get to know students and communities--to notice the specificity of their lives, to wonder genuinely about their worlds, to contextualize their experiences in a wider framework, and to connect with them as the complex people they are-- allows educators to begin to teach in ways that will heal them. As students and educators return to classrooms together, these relationships must be tended to and time must be spent getting to know each other, to say hello and listen for the response. When it comes down to it, radical love is actually contained within the smallest actions, and yet, those may be the most significant moves educators can make. (ERIC). |
