AbstractExperiential learning opportunities support readers in developing the background knowledge that is essential for comprehension. When authentic experiences are not feasible, virtual reality experiences serve as a vicarious approach to help readers have opportunities that promote comprehension. Rooted in experiential learning theory, virtual reality experiences provide an instructional technique that support reading comprehension in an engaging and motivating way. Virtual reality experiences were used by reading specialist candidates in their practicum experience. The candidates connected virtual reality sites to narrative and informational texts in their literacy instruction. This approach was found to be generally successful, despite minor issues that occurred. This manuscript describes the virtual reality experiences used in the practicum and provides resources that may be used for a variety of topics to support literacy and boost motivation.
