Abstract | Apni Shala (Hindi for Our School) is a nonprofit educational foundation located in Mumbai, India. It was set up in 2013 to promote mental health skill development in children in local elementary schools. The goals of the program include increasing emotional literacy of children within a culturally relevant framework and destigmatizing mental health issues in India. The unique components of the Apni Shala approach include a bottom-up, collaborative structure through which parents, teachers, and team leaders come together and collaborate on the content and delivery of social-emotional programming for children in schools. This article describes Apni Shala's history, programming, vision and goals, values, and competencies and content. It also briefly describes Apni Shala's Khoj Community Learning Center, a new development that created a space for high quality education for children in the Govandi/Mankhurd region of Mumbai. Lastly, the article discusses how Apni Shala's work in schools was impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. (ERIC). |
