Abstract | The current challenge of maintaining accessible, effective museum education amid an unprecedented global health crisis has proven that the necessity of public education and museum relevancy is more critical than ever. Rachel Zollinger's former employer, Explora Science Center & Children's Museum (Explora), demonstrates daily how a commitment to publicly accessible education defines their role and responsibility, even in extraordinary circumstances. Her previous experience as an educator with Explora shaped her understanding of how prioritizing empathetic listening manifests in both staff and the greater community in actionable ways, from building equitable learning opportunities to strengthening community interdependence to responding to areas in the community most in need of attention. Many existing social inequalities have been exacerbated by the circumstances of the pandemic, including the so-called digital divide, or the uneven access to sufficient internet and digital connectivity. In this article, Zollinger highlights how Explora, along with community partners, has strived to ease the digital divide and bring digital and nondigital science, technology, engineering, art, and math (STEAM) learning and inclusion statewide during this ongoing crisis.
