Abstract | The purpose of this open letter is to report on an innovative cross-cultural science education program that was introduced to upper primary and lower high schools across New South Wales over a four-year period. Titled 'Sky Stories', the program blends current Western science understandings with Indigenous Australian knowledge of astronomy in order to regain the interest of middle school (Year 5-8) students in school science. It involves students both exploring Indigenous Australian knowledge about the night sky and practicing curriculum-based investigative science. The program, which ran between 2013 and 2016, included professional development and support to enable teachers to deliver a variety of pedagogies that map to the Australian Science Curriculum content. The Sky Stories program has provided one way of delivering interesting and culturally inclusive science. Students may not have always enjoyed the content delivery, but nonetheless, they appear to have been active and involved particularly when offered practical activities. (ERIC). |
