AbstractAt higher education institutions in Vietnam, Academic Writing is a required course for English-major students, which they may take in several semesters. Academic Writing becomes a core course in tertiary curriculum due to its importance and popularity. Teaching students how to write is not easy. Taking the students' challenges in producing good academic writing pieces in English to the case of nonnative speakers of English, the level of difficulty is multiplied. Although Vietnamese students are intensively taught English grammar and vocabulary, their application of this knowledge into writing appears to be unsuccessful. Even in the case of English-major students at college level, it could be accepted that writing is still one of the most challenging parts in their learning programs. Do Na Chi, an instructor of English at an university in Vietnam, describes the challenges of teaching academic writing and some suggestions for make the class more joyful for teachers and students.
