Abstract | In this article, the authors share five strategies for using a primary teacher's existing picture book library to create engaging, standard-supporting lessons in mathematics. Because teachers choose the books they read according to their students' interests and concerns, the lessons they create are also more likely to be highly responsive to students and their community. Learning to see mathematics in our everyday situations happens through frequent practice. The strategies introduced in this article not only encourage students to see mathematics in places where they do not normally look but also give students tools to predict or to imagine different outcomes, using numbers to connect the events in the story to events in their own world.
