Abstract | As an American Indian woman, parent, educator, and scholar, the author grapples with the question of how to ensure American Indian children receive an equitable, just, and appropriate education. The creation of culturally and academically affirming schools for Native children requires educators, to ask themselves some difficult questions. Honest answers to these questions will provide a sense of where educators are in terms of readiness and willingness to engage in the education of Native youth. For many educators, this will require unlearning or, at a minimum, challenging much of what was learned in educator preparation and professional development programs. In this article, the author shares how her personal and professional experiences have been used as a means of advocating for Indigenous children and youth in education. (ERIC). |
