AbstractThe Forest School approach has become very popular in recent years, with many schools offering this educational experience as part of the regular school day. Forest School provides children with the opportunity to engage with the outdoor environment as part of learning, increasing the amount of time children spend outside in the natural world. The benefits of Forest School are many, including opportunities for children to practice risk taking and immerse themselves within their outdoor surroundings. In Scandinavia, where the Forest School approach originated, the outdoors is relatively easy to access; the weather is cool and the environment offers abundant trees and shade. However, in other parts of the world, the outside environment is not so accessible and Forest Schools have not been implemented due to the difficulties of having children engage with inhospitable environments. This very problem is faced in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), which is an oil-rich Gulf State located in the Arabian Peninsula. In the summertime, the temperature in the UAE can exceed 45 degrees Celsius (113 degrees Fahrenheit). Within the desert environment, which has very few trees and shrubs, little natural shade can be found. Given this climate, it seems that a Forest School would not be an immediate fit for the UAE. Taking into account the immense benefits to children of partaking in Forest School, however one international private school, Brighton College Al Ain (BCAA), decided to take on the challenge of bringing Forest School to fruition in a desert environment, transferring the project from a "forest school" into a "desert school." While the approach has been successfully adapted within other climates, such as "Bush School" in Australia, only one school in the UAE has attempted to replicate the Forest School approach. (ERIC).
