Abstract | "Metalepsis" is a narrative structural device that increases the complexity of narrative representations by breaching conventional "relationships and hierarchies between characters, texts, authors, illustrators and readers" (McCallum, 2008, p. 181). The focus of this article is how types of metalepsis contribute to the metafictive nature of "Snappsy the Alligator (Did Not Ask to Be in This Book!)." Content analysis of Grade 4 students' responses about the picturebook revealed they wrote about how reader attention is drawn to the disruption of the storyworld boundary through the use of various metaleptic devices. Information about metafiction and metalepsis is followed by a brief description of the research context and methods to assist readers in understanding and contextualizing the students' responses. Subsequently, the author provides an overview of "Snappsy the Alligator," describes the data analysis procedures and findings, and discusses the significance of metalepsis with respect to the development of students' narrative competence.
