| Abstract | YouTube. Snapchat. Instagram. TikTok. WhatsApp. Kik. Discord. Houseparty. VSCO. Ask students to share how they entertain themselves during their downtime and their list might look something like this. Now, ask them to imagine that if they could not stream or use an electronic device, how they would keep themselves engaged using analog ways. When they mention books, probe further and ask students to list how they currently access books and to consider any pros and cons to having books on hand. Use this as a way to introduce students to the young people who served as soldiers, especially in the world wars of the twentieth century, and how they entertained themselves and passed the time during long tours of inactive duty. Indeed, books did go to war. Ask students what books they might consider worthy of this duty. (As Provided). |
