AbstractThis systematic review aims to critically evaluate all studies that have investigated the effectiveness of communication skills training programmes for social work students. The PICO (Population, Intervention, Comparator, Outcomes) framework and stakeholder collaboration informed the development of the research question. Student social workers constitute the population, communication skills training is the intervention under investigation, the absence of communication skills training or a course unrelated to communication are the comparators, and attitudes, knowledge, confidence and behavioural changes are the outcomes of interest. The review builds on the work of Trevithick et al. (2004), but is not restricted by the year of publication or language. The research question the review seeks to answer is, 'What is the effectiveness of communication skills training for improving the communicative abilities of social work students?' The review seeks to provide a robust evaluation of communication skills training for social work students and explains variations in practice to encourage evidence-based teaching and learning in this important area of social work education.
