Abstract | In times of crisis, individuals instinctively seek out the presence of others. Seeing our emotions reflected on another person's face is reassuring; it lets us know that we are not alone in the experience. Will Simpkins believes this is why we see the best of humanity in times of crisis. As vice president for student affairs at Metropolitan State University (MSU) of Denver, Simpkins is now facing times of crisis on his own campus, and his first thought (after ensuring the safety of the community) is how to bring people together. As the coronavirus affected the MSU Denver campus, the Student Affairs leadership team pivoted to hosting short virtual town halls three times weekly to share rapidly evolving decisions affecting the campus effectively bringing over 200 student affairs staff, now scattered across the Front Range of Colorado, together in a digital community. Additionally MSU Denver has continued the tradition of community leadership for the common good during a public health emergency. From offering their campus hotel to the City of Denver as a potential health facility, to running drive-up COVID19 testing in a parking lot, they have eagerly embraced their role as the city's university. Simpkins believes that his role as Vice President is to embrace acts of change where possible and fight to ensure that all students thrive through education. Time and again, higher education has survived and thrived through times of crisis by coming together in community, acting for the public good, and communicating authentically and honestly. (ERIC). |
