AbstractA recent survey of 41 different state boards of education revealed that officials from 28 states indicate that they are experiencing teacher shortages. The shortages in some states are significant. While the teacher shortage in many states is tied to different factors, one frequently cited reason for leaving the teaching profession is low pay. While union contracts prevented teachers in many different jurisdictions from salary reductions, stagnant salaries have become quite common. Teachers in some parts of the country have not received a salary increase in several years. In an ever more divided political climate, it seems that support for public education may become a legislative priority that both political parties can agree upon as the nation moves into 2019. The following contents are included: (1) Elevating Education and Educators: Commentary on the 2018 State of the States (Christine Kiracofe and Spencer C. Weiler); (2) Alabama (Philip Westbrook and Brenda Mendiola); (3) Alaska (Amy Dagley); (4) Arizona (David G.
