| Abstract | In the vast repository of research on family involvement in schools, researchers agree that both students and schools do better when families are involved (Epstein et al., 2009; Lareau, 2011; Mapp, 2002). There is little research, however, on parent involvement in the arts. Notwithstanding the lack of published data, programs offer funding and support to schools creating arts partnerships with families. For instance, the Center for Arts Education Parents as Arts Partners (PAAP) grant program funds innovative programs for New York City public schools whereby cultural organizations, parents, and schools form partnerships. Schools receiving these grants involve parents and children in collaborative artmaking opportunities from mural painting to songwriting (Center for Arts Education, 2019). The PAAP program is based on the belief that the arts are a means of cultivating involvement in schools, which can enhance a child's total education. This article describes how one art teacher launched a semester long quilt project. The powerful take aways that emerged from this project are also discussed. (As Provided). |
