| Abstract | Teaching and promoting multicultural competence at Azusa Pacific University, diversity and social justice at a Christian university, can result in a paradoxical intersection of higher education. There is often tension associated with graduate students exploring diversity and Christian faith. Specifically the unbiblical nature of Christian privilege when it comes at the expense of the marginalized, such as people of color, LGBTQ populations, and the undocumented. The diversity course that the author teaches serves a higher purpose with the need to develop the capacity for cultural humility. The author changed the way they were teaching because they recognized religious beliefs and faith backgrounds are highly personal and cannot be underestimated in the classroom. Many of the students see their Christian beliefs and values a set of universally shared assumptions and did not see how complex the world is. The author discovered the best place to start was worldview; the approach begins with students' lived experiences in order to create critical perspective and action directed toward social justice. Even in the face of discouraging odds, higher education as a whole must create experiences for students, faculty, and staff to understand how worldview is shaped and to have the heart and mind to understand social realities in this country.
