AbstractObjects are embedded in a network of relations from which they derive their meaning. Radical Jewelry Makeover (RJM) encourages to question the networks in which people participate as makers or consumers of the range of items that can be considered jewelry. RJM is a community jewelry mining and recycling project that emphasizes the ethical sourcing of materials. During its recent Wisconsin iteration, RJM involved the collection of community donations of jewelry of all types; volunteer makers and professional jewelers evaluating donations and sorting materials to be reused; and university students learning about issues related to ethical metalsmithing, creating new jewelry pieces out of the community "mined" materials, documenting processes and outcomes, and sharing what they learned with community members who attended exhibits and sales of completed work. In this article, the author provides a brief background on the RJM project and then describes moments of research, sorting, stories, production, and sale as she experienced them in Wisconsin. The author concludes with a discussion of what makes any of the project radical. (ERIC).
