AbstractOver half of the children between the ages of 1 and 5 in California are classified as dual language learners (DLLs), with most identified as Latinx and from Spanish-speaking backgrounds. Latinx students are consistently under-identified and undertreated for mental health services, necessitating a change in service delivery that begins with universal mental health screening in schools. This article provides recommended steps for mental health screening for Latinx DLLs. Specific considerations are provided for screening DLLs in a culturally responsive and congruent manner that ensures the inclusion and proper evaluation of their needs. The following steps are recommended: (1) identifying key stakeholders, a team, and a plan; (2) selecting screening instruments; (3) obtaining consent; (4) administering the screening instrument; (5) scoring and presenting results; and (6) treatment and follow-up. A case example is included. Mental health screening for Latinx DLLs can help advance efforts to improve culturally responsive, school-based mental health practices. (As Provided).
