AbstractIn contemporary art, many artists have incorporated playful and functional elements into their artistic expression beyond the conventional perception of art merely as an appreciated object. In this article, the authors touch on the movement of art in daily living and explore the playful, functional, and interactive nature of art by Tin Yan Wong, a sculptor based in Hong Kong whose art integrates aesthetic form with practical function. Wong's art, created out of discarded wood, addresses the issues of recycling and environmental sustainability. His art inspires students to create art for daily living and learn about how the ideas of viewer interaction and practical function are essential to the completion of a work of art. Through a series of classroom activities introduced here, students will have an opportunity to learn about the playful and interactive aspects of art beyond the conventional perception of art as a displayed object. Wong's art inspires students to think about the relationship between recycling and environmental sustainability by bringing discarded objects to life. It inspires them to reuse found objects and recycle discarded items for artistic expression to sustain and care for their living environment. Art in daily living brings a utilitarian perspective to art education, encouraging students to use art to enhance their homes and communities in a sustainable way. The authors encourage art teachers to use Wong's art series to inspire students to care for their environment by recycling and reusing resources to create art and to learn about the playful, interactive, and functional nature of art beyond the conventional perception of art as a display object.
