Abstract | In 2013 David Hockney exhibited 147 pieces of his iPad artwork at the De young Museum in San Francisco, drawing attention to the creative possibilities the iPad could open for serious artwork (O'Brien, 2013). The iPad became a core part of Hockney's creative process, according to the audio tour of this exhibit. While that may surprise those unfamiliar with the medium, it was perhaps less surprising to the art teachers who find school districts snapping up the tool and incorporating it into all aspects of core curriculum, paving the way for the next generation of Hockney-style artists. In this article, the author explores the use of iPads in several U.S. elementary and middle schools in art classes, the art projects being conducted with iPads, strengths and weaknesses of using iPads in art teaching, as well as the benefits, challenges, and difficulties when using iPads for instructional purposes. As more schools and art teachers across the country consider adopting the use of tablets in classrooms, the findings from this research will be helpful in aiding decision makers. (ERIC). |
