Abstract | In an exploration of methods to advance language acquisition without the inconvenience of participating in an immersion option, the authors discovered research on Free Voluntary Reading (FVR). FVR has made a recent resurgence, especially in the context of language acquisition. Krashen (2004) proposes FVR as the answer to building language proficiency in a fun and natural way. Krashen's (2004, 2011) publications conclude that students and language learners make tremendous gains in literacy and language acquisition from practicing FVR. Therefore, FVR is an excellent method for language learners who wish to advance their foreign language proficiency beyond existing levels. Also discussed are aspects of adolescent and adult cognitive functions as they relate to language acquisition and reading, along with effective strategies for practice that make FVR a good option for adult language learners.
